Before Sherlock met John, he had to take drugs to stimulate his brain. Boredom just wasn't an option. He had no friends, but had many enemies.
When John and Sherlock started sharing a flat, the consulting detective realized that not all humans were insufferable. This man had a small measure of skill in observation. They soon became very good friends, despite what Sherlock might think. So the day John was in real trouble, the day he had no other choice than to kill himself, he realized how much he actually cared for his best friend. His only friend. So he sacrificed himself willingly.
He woke up a few days later in a clean white room. Getting up from the bed he was on, he realized it was an infirmary. He'd survived? His first thought after that was of John. They must have killed him. Until a man in a pinstriped suit walked in. Introducing himself as "The Doctor", he told Sherlock that he'd revived him with some of his regeneration energy. "Wasn't your time to die." he stated. Realizing he had actually succeeded in killing himself, he knew John was relatively safe.
Asking the Doctor where he was was, he found out that he was in a time machine. It took a lot of convincing, of course, but in the end, Sherlock had no choice but to accept the truth. Once he'd come to terms with time and space travel in a small box that was bigger on the inside, he demanded that the Doctor would help him find the assassins. "I won't help you kill them, but I'll help you find them."
They soon got rid of the killers, and Sherlock was finally able to return to John. But he would never forget the time travelling alien in a suit.

Roleplay Sample: Sherlock walked into Mycroft's office, and sat in the chair in front of his desk. He'd just slipped by the secretary, not wanting his presence to be alerted to everyone in the building. His brother was sitting behind his desk, reading the newspaper. Sherlock rolled his eyes at his brother's mediocrity and spoke up "You know, there are much more interesting things to do than ready the paper." He saw the man give a small start and lower the paper. His eyes widened at the sight of his supposed dead brother. "S-Sherlock..." he began, guilt evident in his eyes. The consulting detective cut him off quickly, not wanting to hear his apologies "Don't bother, Mycroft, it's fine. I've had two years to get over it." he spoke in a cool voice, then quickly changed the subject "So, how is John?" he asked quietly. "I've been meaning to go back to Baker Street, just don't know how..."
He'd often spied on his friend, but he never watched long enough to really see if the man was alright. He'd acquired a mustache, which obviously had to go. He'd been dating a lot more as well, clearly trying to keep himself busy. Sighing, he looked up at Mycroft's eyes, which were watching him a bit strangely. Without a word, he pulled out a file and handed it to Sherlock. As he looked through the folder, Mycroft spoke, trying to sound casual "John doesn't live on Baker Street any more. He's gotten on with his life." Sherlock stared at a picture of the doctor, and chuckled lightly. "What life? I've been away..."
